Daisy Troop 30074

Daisy Troop 30074 from South Burlington joined us today for some ELPH FUN!

Wearing their pink cowgirl hats and pink bandannas the girls were very anxious to come into the barn and meet the horses.

Before we started our afternoon we covered some basic safety rules and gave the children a quick tour of the barn.

We began with a scavenger hunt – Find the missing blue bell boot. The children were running up and down the hills in search for the missing bell boot. Within minutes the boot was discovered with team work! Good job girls!

Next up were our lessons on anatomy and proper grooming.

With Buzz in the crossties the Daisies were eager to begin.

The anatomy lesson was first and within 30 minutes the girls were able to identify the following parts:

  • withers
  • back
  • loin
  • croup
  • dock
  • tail
  • point of buttocks
  • buttocks
  • hindquarters
  • sheath
  • barrel
  • belly
  • mane
  • forelock
  • crest
  • poll
  • face
  • muzzle
  • chin
  • chin groove
  • throttle
  • chest
  • shoulder
  • forearm
  • chestnut
  • hoof

The Daisies were each given a grooming brush with instructions on how to properly groom a horse. Everyone took turns brushing Buzz’s body, tail and mane.  Once Buzz was all cleaned-up the girls were split up into 3 groups of 3 and assigned to different horses to test out their new grooming techniques.

Axel’s group – Worked hard on cleaning up his muddy legs and messy tail

Scotty’s group  – Worked hard on cleaning up the mud on his chest and barrel

Tucker’s group  – Worked hard on cleaning up his muddy legs and hooves

When the horses were all groomed the children were given a lesson on how to tack up a western saddle and how to put on a bridle. Once the horses were tacked up we headed down to the indoor arena where Zanna showed the girls how to properly mount and dismount a horse.

Each group took turns riding the horse they were assigned too. Even Daisy troop leader Mrs. Kaczmarek hopped on Axel!

The children were all smiling, laughing and everyone was extremely well behaved and having a wonderful time!

Thank you Daisy Troop 30074 for joining us for the afternoon we had a blast!!
